Origin and history

The house at 82, rue du Maréchal-Foch in Dambach-la-Ville is an emblematic building of the Alsatian heritage. Built in 1588, as evidenced by the date engraved on a post of an ancient carved window, it reflects the civil architecture of the late Renaissance. This window, removed around 1903, had a similar decor to that made by artisan Georges Strub for another house on the same street in 1599. Subsequent changes, such as the replacement of windows or the modernization of the side panel, have altered some of the original elements.

The building was listed as historic monuments by order of 6 January 1930, protecting its facades and roof. This official recognition underscores its importance in the local heritage, although parts such as the ground floor windows or the exterior staircase have been redesigned at an indefinite time. The house is part of a larger architectural complex, typical of the Alsatian villages of the modern era, where half-timbered houses played a central role in urban life.

The precise location of the house, in the heart of Dambach-la-Ville in the Lower Rhine, makes it a witness of regional history. Its address, initially registered as 76 rue du Maréchal-Foch before being renumbered, illustrates the urban evolution of the village. Although details of its original use or occupants are lacking, its style and protection make it a remarkable example of the Alsatian architectural heritage from the 16th to the 17th century.
