Origin and history

The house of Saint-Flour is a mixed-use building (commercial and residential), built in the enclosure of the sixth chapel of the former collegial church of Notre-Dame. Today, this church is transformed into a wheat hall, a public space dedicated to the grain trade. The integration of a habitat into a desacralized place of worship illustrates the adaptive reuse of religious heritage over the centuries.

The building has been listed as a Historic Monument since 1946, with specific protection for the house itself. Its location, Place de la Halle aux Bleds, makes it a central element of the urban fabric of Saint-Flour. The official address (10 Place de la Halle) and GPS coordinates confirm its anchoring in the historic heart of the city, marked by the presence of the collegiate.

The Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, and more particularly Cantal, is rich in medieval religious heritage. College churches like Notre-Dame de Saint-Flour played a major social, economic and spiritual role for local communities. Their transformation into secular spaces (halls, housing) reflects urban developments and the changing needs of people throughout the ages.
