Origin and history
The Maison Cavaignac is an emblematic building located on Rue du Corps-Franc Pommies in the commune of Gourdon, Occitanie. Although its origins date back to the 13th or 14th century, it was profoundly redesigned around 1700. At that time, a monumental door was added, decorated with canned pilasters, a triangular pediment and a carved vantail representing allegories of Vices and Vertus. These changes marked its current architectural style, mixing medieval heritage and classical influences of the Great Century.
The house is inseparable from French political history, because it is the home of Jean-Baptiste Cavaignac (1762-1829), Member of Parliament for the Lot to the National Convention. This link with the French Revolution gives the site a major historical dimension. The façade was listed as historical monuments in 1929, while the door, considered exceptional, was classified in 1932. These protections highlight its heritage value, both architectural and historical.
The building also illustrates the urban evolution of Gourdon, a city in Quercy whose heritage reflects social and political transformations since the Middle Ages. The Cavaignac House, by its architecture and history, bears witness to the links between the local and the national, between an influential family and the upheavals of the Revolution. Today, it remains a symbol of the rich past of the Occitan region, attracting lovers of history and art.
Available sources, such as Monumentum and Wikipedia, confirm its status as a Historical Monument and specify its exact address: 52 rue du Corps Franc Pommies. These references also allow us to situate the building in its geographical and administrative context, in the heart of the Lot department, in the former Midi-Pyrénées region (now Occitanie).
