Origin and history

The house at 5 rue Bourbonnoux in Bourges is a remarkable example of 16th century civil architecture. Built by Jean du Chièvre, the city's alderman, it combines Renaissance elements such as the pilasters with ionic capitals and a pedimented skylight, while maintaining traces of its mixed use (habitation and commerce) with a shop on the ground floor under low arcade.

The interior organization reveals a corridor illuminated by a stud bay, while the second floor preserved its original cross-section. The courtyard, accessible from the street, houses old openings and a covered well decorated with the shield with the arms of Jean du Chièvre, testifying to the social status of its sponsor. These architectural and heraldic details underline the importance of urban elites in the beautification of Bourges during the Renaissance.

Ranked a Historical Monument by decree of 10 January 1928, the protection specifically concerns the facade, the roof on street and the well of the courtyard (cadastre HX 96). The approximate address from GPS coordinates (2 Impasse de la Poissonnerie) differs slightly from that recorded in the Mérimée base, reflecting the challenges of precise location for ancient monuments in urban areas.
