Facade and roof (Case IN 134): inscription by decree of 17 April 1931

Origin and history

The house at 7 rue Pelvoysin in Bourges is a mansion built in the 18th century, during the reign of Louis XVI. The building is distinguished by its stone façade, decorated with windows with ground straight frames, characteristic of the neoclassical style in vogue at this time. The entrance gate, surmounted by a basket handle, supports a balcony on the upper floor and features on its top a carved cartridge, an emblematic decorative element of civil architecture of the Enlightenment century.

The protection of this monument was formalized by a decree of 17 April 1931, specifically listing the facade and roof in the inventory of Historic Monuments. Although the exact location is approximate (noted 5/10 precisely), the address confirmed by the Merimée base corresponds to 7 Pelvoysin Street, in the Cher department. Today, the building belongs to a private company, but its current use (visits, rental, or other) is not specified in the available sources.

The architectural style of this house reflects the influence of Parisian models under Louis XVI, where symmetry and sobriety of lines dominated. The ground frames and the basket handle portal illustrate the know-how of local artisans, while at the same time testifying to the high social status of its first owners, probably from the bourgeoisie or the Berruyère aristocracy. These private hotels served as both a residence and a symbol of prestige in a city like Bourges, which was marked by its administrative and judicial role in the Centre-Val de Loire region.
