Origin and history

The House of the Auditory, located in Cervières, was built in the middle of the 15th century (although often associated with the 16th century for its period of use). It was initially used as a residence for Captain-Catelain, an officer in charge of local administration and territorial defence under the Old Regime. His name comes from his later function: a place where court hearings were held.

In the early 17th century, after the demolition of Cervières Castle, the house became the official seat of local justice. The courtroom, called the audience, gives its final name to the building. This transition reflects the adaptation of institutions after the disappearance of traditional feudal structures, such as the castle.

Ranked a Historic Monument in 1949, the house today embodies the judicial and administrative heritage of the region. Its architecture and history illustrate the evolution of local authorities between the Middle Ages and the modern era, as well as the importance of seigneurial residences in the territorial organization.
