Origin and history

The 15th century Cave House, located on Rue des Moineaux in Vouillon, is an emblematic monument of medieval civil architecture. This type of construction, often associated with artisanal or domestic activities, reflects the lifestyles and construction techniques of the period in the Centre-Val de Loire region. The vaulted cellar houses were common in medieval villages, serving both as a dwelling, as a storage place and sometimes as a workshop for local trades.

At that time, Vouillon, like many villages in the region, was marked by a rural and artisanal economy. The stone houses, with their vaulted cellars, kept food and protected the inhabitants from climatic variations. These buildings also played a social role, hosting collective activities or trade in the heart of the towns.

Their preservation today offers a valuable insight into everyday life in the Middle Ages in this part of France.
