Hippolyte Bayard - Inventor and photographer
Creator of the direct positive process in photography.
Origin and history
The home of Hippolyte Bayard, located in Breteuil, Hauts-de-France, is one of the oldest buildings in the city, built in the second half of the 18th century. Its torchi-burdened wood panel facade, based on a stone-cut solin, reflects the region's traditional architectural techniques. After 1878, the building underwent modifications that partially modified its original structure.
Hippolyte Bayard (1801-1887), born in this house, lived part of his life there and developed his research on photography. He is recognized as the inventor in France of the direct positive process, ancestor of the Polaroid system, a major innovation in the history of photography. This process produced a positive image without intermediate negative, thus revolutionizing the photographic practices of the time.
Classified Historic Monument by order of 14 October 2002, the house is protected for its heritage interest and its connection to French scientific history. The building, located at 4 Bayard Square, retains a strong symbolic value, both for the city of Breteuil and for the history of photography. Its location, noted as satisfactory a priori (level 6/10), makes it a point of accessible cultural interest in the Oise department.
