Origin and history

The backyard house, located in Lille in the Nord department, is a typical example of 17th century urban housing. Dated precisely from 1677, it is distinguished by the preservation of its original elements, including a burguet and a roof in flat tiles, characteristic of the buildings of this period in the region.

This house was classified as Historic Monument by order of 15 November 1996, thus recognizing its heritage value. It is located at 64 rue Princesse, in an emblematic district of Lille, and its state of conservation makes it a rare testimony to the civil architecture of the second half of the seventeenth century.

At that time Lille was a city in full expansion, marked by an architecture combining Flemish and French influences. The backyard houses, often built in depth to optimize urban space, reflected the social and economic organization of the time, where craftsmen and merchants lived in both residential and professional spaces.
