Origin and history

The log house of 17 rue des Boucheries in Billom, classified as a Historic Monument, dates from the 15th century. Its ground floor, built in arcose bellows, features a arched pedestrian door, typical of medieval architecture. The floors, in wooden panels with fill of rubble, rest on corbellations supported by ground beams and carved consoles. A window on the first floor still retains its original wooden frame and support, while the second floor is marked by a row of four finely worked wooden consoles.

The facade, partially masked by a crepi, reveals a complex structure where tradition and functionality blend together. The openings, reworked at later unspecified times, include an old shop bay today blocked on the ground floor. This house illustrates the evolution of constructive techniques between the Middle Ages and subsequent periods, while at the same time testifying to the past commercial activity of Rue des Boucheries.

The inscription of the facade on the street and its roof corresponding to the inventory of Historic Monuments by decree of 4 January 1963 underlines its heritage importance. Although some modifications have altered its original appearance, the preserved elements, such as sculpted aisseliers and mouldings, offer a valuable overview of the 15th century craftsmanship in Auvergne.
