Facades and roofs (Case AD 104): entry by order of 16 August 1976
Origin and history
The turret house of Rignac is a historical monument located in the village of the same name, in Occitanie. This building, emblematic of Quercy's rural architecture, is distinguished by its steep roof and its two square turrets, originally designed as dovecotes. Although its construction may date back to the 17th century, its present state dates mainly from the 18th century, reflecting the techniques and needs of the time.
Ranked among the Historical Monuments, this house saw its facades and roofs protected by a registration order in 1976. This type of construction was common in the Occitan countryside, where pigeons played an important economic role for peasant families. Turrets, often integrated into homes, served as both a food reserve and a symbol of social status.
The location of the house on the central square of Rignac suggests its importance in the community life of the village. Turret houses like this were usually occupied by wealthy families or local notables, able to invest in such elaborate structures. Today, it remains an architectural testimony of rural life in Quercy in the 17th and 18th centuries.
