Origin and history

The house of the domain of Bonsol is a property in the commune of Esseintes, in the department of Gironde, in Nouvelle-Aquitaine. The estate, originally dating back to the 15th century, was enlarged in the 18th century by a northeast wing. This extension houses remarkable wallpapers, laid between 1815 and 1820, attributed to the Dufour factory. These interior decorations, of great rarity, were protected by an inscription as historical monuments in 2009.

The estate is located north of the village of Esseintes, at the place called Bonsol, along the D9 departmental road linking La Réole to Saint-Félix-de-Foncaude. The 18th century wing, with its decor and wallpapers, was specifically preserved for its heritage interest. The motifs of the wallpapers, composed of turquoise blue lees decorated with orange flower crowns and geometric friezes, illustrate the artisanal know-how of the period.

The panelling and decorative edges, including representations of stylized curtains, complete this set. Although partially modified (the angels were removed and their legs covered), these elements reflect the evolution of decorative tastes between the 18th and early 19th centuries. The domain, now known, remains a significant example of regional architectural and artistic heritage.
