Origin and history
The Rabbi de Scherwiller House, located at 8 rue du Giessen, has been a historic monument since 1985. Built in 1762, it combines a stone ground floor and a wood-paned, coated floor. Originally, the first floor housed a synagogue, while the ground floor served as a dwelling for the rabbi. An inscription in Hebrew letters on the entrance door attests to this date of construction.
Over time, a new synagogue was erected nearby in the late eighteenth or early nineteenth century, thus releasing the old building for purely residential use. The façades and roofs of this building, marked by traces of taskers on the d'angle chains, were protected by ministerial decree in 1985. Today, it bears witness to local Jewish history and traditional Alsatian architecture.
The building illustrates the evolution of the Jewish communities in Alsace, where synagogues were often integrated into private dwellings. Its mixed architecture, combining stone and wood, reflects the regional construction techniques of the time. The Rabbi's house remains a symbol of Scherwiller's cultural and religious heritage in the Lower Rhine department.
