Origin and history
The 16th century house of Montreuil-sur-Barse is a brick and stone building erected between 1550 and 1560. It preserves huisseries with their original shutters, as well as two large chimneys on the ground floor, one of which bears the date of 1565. These elements testify to its typical architecture of the French Renaissance, marked by a mixture of materials and attention to decorative details.
In the 19th century, the house underwent notable changes: the structure was remodeled, a door was pierced, and a central corridor was created to modernize the interior space. Despite these transformations, it has retained remarkable elements, such as the part filed, which justified its classification as Historical Monuments by order of 24 March 1997.
Located at 32 Rue du 27 August 1944, this house illustrates the architectural evolution of bourgeois or affluent dwellings in the Champagne-Ardenne region (now Grand Est). Its current state, although reshaped, allows us to understand the construction techniques and lifestyles of the Renaissance period, while reflecting the subsequent adaptations to the needs of the following centuries.
