House of the sixteenth century (Box AP 522): inscription by decree of 29 March 1935

Origin and history

The 16th century House, located in Auray, Morbihan, is a typical example of Breton civil architecture of the Renaissance. This building, which dates back to the 16th century, was listed as a Historical Monument by order of 29 March 1935. Its inscription specifically concerns the cadastral plot AP 522, highlighting its heritage importance for the city and the region.

At that time, Auray, the historic town of Brittany, was a dynamic commercial and maritime hub. The houses of this period often reflected the prosperity of local merchants or notables, incorporating architectural elements such as half-timbers, skylights, or sled windows. These houses served both as housing and as a place of work, illustrating the close link between private and economic life in the Breton towns of the Renaissance.

The precise location of this house, at 21 rue du Docteur-A.-Jardin (formerly rue du Bois or rue des Fèves), is documented in the Mérimée base. Although the sources do not specify its original use or its potential owners, its state of conservation and registration make it a valuable testimony of Auray's urban history. The accuracy of its geographical location is assessed as "a priori satisfactory", allowing clear identification in the current urban fabric.
