Portal (Box BN 168): Registration by Order of 27 June 1984

Origin and history

The house in Thouars, dating from the 1st quarter of the 18th century, is a remarkable example of the civil architecture of the Louis XIV period. Its portal, characteristic of sobriety and classic elegance, consists of a cochère door opening onto an inner courtyard. The arch in the middle hanger rests on two impostes, while the top is adorned with a curvilinear pediment with a broken base, embellished with a cartridge of volute foliage and drapes held by rings.

This portal, registered as a Historical Monument by order of 27 June 1984, presents a central location which seems destined for a coat of arms, now disappeared. The precise address, 18 Harcher Street, and its Insee code (79329) place it in the Deux-Sèvres department, in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region. The location, although noted as fair (5/10), allows to identify this monument as a testimony of bourgeois domestic architecture of the era.

The architectural style of the portal, marked by decorative elements such as volutes and drapes, reflects the influence of the aesthetic cannons of the reign of Louis XIV. These details, combined with the arch structure, illustrate a period when classical art is democratized in private constructions, while maintaining a certain geometric rigor and a measured ornamentation.
