Origin and history
The wooden house located 7 Rue des Boucheries in Billom, listed as a Historic Monument, illustrates the civil architecture of the 15th and 16th centuries. Its ground floor in Darkose bellow contrasts with the two upper floors in half-timbered, covered with a coating on filler bellows. The south façade, open near the church bedside, features corbellations supported by ground consoles and a horizontal sandalstone, typical of the period.
The openings of the ground floor, reworked at an indefinite time, retain a chamfered lintel in solid wood, while the windows of the floors have kept their frame and salient support moulure. Traces of an old shop bay, partially blocked, testify to past commercial use. The façade was renovated in the 1980s, however, preserving its original structural elements.
Protected by decree of 4 January 1963 for its façade on street and its corresponding roof (cadastre C 1024), this house now belongs to a private company. Its state of conservation, although marked by modifications, offers a valuable insight into medieval constructive techniques in urban areas. The location, noted as "passable" (5/10), and photos licensed under Creative Commons (MOSSOT credit) complete available sources from Monumentum and Merimée data.
