Origin and history
La Maison du Saumon is a half-timbered house located in Chartres, Eure-et-Loir department, in the Centre-Val de Loire region. Dated from the second half of the 15th century and the beginning of the 16th century, it is distinguished by its facade adorned with a wooden carved salmon, which gave it its name. It is located on the Place de la Poissonnerie, where once the fish market of the city was held, close to the cathedral.
Ranked as historical monuments since 1928, the Saumon House features a typical architecture of the time, with two upper-storey corbellations. Its façade, built in wooden panels lined with limestone and earth mortar, features mouldings and various carved motifs. Although later transformations have modified some interior elements, such as the removal of poles or shingles, the building retains a marked historical character.
Today, the Saumon House houses the Chartres Tourist Office. Inside, models, films, extensions of ancient documents and reproductions allow you to discover in a fun and educational way the touristic riches of the city. This place, owned by the commune, plays a central role in the valorisation of the cartrain heritage.
The façade and attic of the house have been protected since the 1928 classification. The exact address, 10-14 Place de la Poissonnerie, makes it a must-see point for visitors exploring the historic centre of Chartres, between the cathedral and medieval alleys.
