Origin and history
The house of Tayac, also known as the castle of Tayac, is an emblematic building located on Rue Pierre-Chalaud in Uzerche, in Corrèze. Dating from the 16th and 17th centuries, it is distinguished by remarkable architecture, including a pepper tower and a square tower. The latter has a shield evoking the legend of the city's weapons. The 16th century gate and turret, as well as facades and roofs, were protected as historical monuments, with a first inscription in 1963 and an extension in 2020.
The castle belonged to the Gautier family, active during the Revolution and Empire, then to Jean Philippot de Tayac, mayor of Uzerche from 1866 to 1877. The latter, together with his wife, bequeathed their wealth to the city and to the local hospice. The monument's protection now covers facades, roofs, the main stairwell and the garden, excluding the north wing.
The notable architectural elements include a 16th-century staircase entrance door, adorned with a pediment with remains of sculptures, as well as a turret on cap. These details reflect the historical and artistic importance of the site, classified as a historical monument of the Corrèze. The building is located at 23 rue Pierre-Chalaud, in an urban setting marked by its medieval and reborn past.
