Origin and history

The house located at 29 quai Vauban in Besançon is a historic monument whose facade and roof, as well as the carriageway and adjacent wharf, were inscribed by order of 31 May 1934. This building is part of a larger architectural complex, combined with the urban fortifications designed by Vauban, an emblematic military heritage of the city. Legal protections also extend to elements of the surrounding ramparts, including buried remains, bastioned towers, and round roads, reflecting the strategic importance of Besançon throughout the centuries.

This monument is inseparable from the urban enclosure of Besançon, itself classified as Historical Monuments. The ramparts, bastioned towers (like those of Rivotte or Bregille), and other defensive works (lunette de Trois-Chatels, tower of the Pelotte) bear witness to the military engineering of the 17th and 18th centuries. The house, by its location on the Vauban wharf, participates in this historic landscape where civil habitat and defensive infrastructure mix, illustrating the duality between daily life and strategic protection.

The accuracy of its location is considered "passable" (note 5/10), and the monument remains a private property, without any indication of its accessibility to the public. Available sources, including the Merimée and Monumentum base, highlight its link with other classified elements, such as the Citadel or the military dovecote of Bregille. These associations strengthen its anchor in a larger heritage network, marked by the legacy of Vauban and the military history of Franche-Comté.

The legal protections cover not only visible parts (reparts, bastions) but also buried remains, such as those of the counterscarp of the tower of Rivotte or the casemates of the rue Girod-de-Chantrans. These measures aim to preserve both the building and archaeological traces, providing a comprehensive overview of past defensive systems. The house of the Quai Vauban, although discreet, thus embodies a link of this collective heritage, where each element, from the guard corps to the haulage path, tells part of the Besançon history.
