Origin and history

The house at 1, rue du Sable in Bouxwiller is a typical example of Alsatian civil architecture of the late 16th century. Built in 1595, as evidenced by the date engraved on the lintel of the entrance door, it combines crepy stone on the ground floor and wooden panels on the upper floors. Its facades, decorated with massive sandstone chains and ground bays, reflect the artisanal know-how of the era, with details such as the cross-of-Saint-André or the tri-directional solvage.

The house is distinguished by its vertical organization: the ground floor, originally conceived as a high cellar or commercial space, contrasts with the corbelled floors, typical of the urban constructions of the Renaissance. The raised door, accessible by an external sandstone staircase, and its dated room underline the symbolic importance of the entrance. Subsequent changes, such as the remodelling of the bays in the 19th century or their restoration in 2000, illustrate the evolution of its uses while preserving its historical character.

Classified as a historic monument since 1930 for its facades and roof, this house embodies Alsatian architectural heritage. The initials "MI AN" engraved on the door evoke its sponsors, although their identity remains unknown. Its location at the corner of Rue du 22-Novembre, with three open facades, makes it a significant element of the urban landscape of Bouxwiller, a city of the Bas-Rhin marked by its medieval and reborn history.
