Entrance gate: by order of 5 May 1928

Origin and history

The house at 4 rue des Boulangers in Colmar, Haut-Rhin department, is a building currently built in 1749. However, its heritage interest lies mainly in its entrance gate, a Renaissance-style vestige dating back to 1616. This richly decorated portal is the only remaining element of the original structure, bearing witness to the architecture of this period.

The portal is distinguished by its arcade made up of seats where diamond-pointed bosses alternate with flat surfaces. Flanched with pilasters ending in consoles, it supports a carved and adorned entablement. This portal was classified as historical monuments by decree of 5 May 1928, highlighting its artistic and historical value.

Although the present building, rebuilt in 1749, is not of particular architectural interest, the preservation of this Renaissance portal offers an overview of the art of construction in the early seventeenth century. It illustrates the influence of Italian styles in the Alsatian architecture of this period, while marking the urban evolution of Colmar.

The location of this monument, in an emblematic street of Colmar, reinforces its importance in the local heritage. Rue des Boulangers, typical of the historic centre, is home to several old buildings, some of which are also protected. This portal, with its sculptural details, attracts the attention of passersby and history lovers.

Today, the house at 4 rue des Boulangers remains an example of the superposition of architectural epochs in Colmar. The contrast between the Renaissance portal and the 18th century facade reflects urban transformations and changing aesthetic tastes over the centuries. This monument, although partially preserved, contributes to the wealth of Colmarian heritage.
