Origin and history

The house at 5 rue du Marché in Rouffach, Haut-Rhin, is a typical example of the Renaissance architecture of the Rhine. Built in the 3rd quarter of the 17th century, it is distinguished by its chanting gable adorned with volutes, candelabras and a shell, as well as by an angle oriel surmounted by an arrow. The snout windows and ground chambranles highlight its refined style.

The house was erected in 1663 by Jean-Henri Sohn and Madeleine Kopp (or Klopp according to the sources), as indicated by the date engraved on the lodge. Jean Sohn's wooded coat of arms, representing a double-tailed siren, testify to his belonging to an affluent family. An inscription in German on the light of the lodge evokes a moral reflection on money and reward in the afterlife.

Ranked a historic monument since 1929, the house has undergone some modifications, including the re-perceived openings of the ground floor on the gable and the addition of an 18th-century crossette door on the drop-roof wall. The staircase has been restored, but the ensemble retains its historical character, illustrating the architectural know-how of the time.

The location of this building, in the heart of Rouffach, an Alsatian city marked by its medieval and reborn history, makes it a valuable testimony to the local heritage. The house, with its protected facades and roofs, embodies the cultural and artistic heritage of the Grand Est region, formerly integrated with historical Alsace.
