Origin and history
The house in Bèze, in the Côte-d'Or department in Burgundy-Franche-Comté, dates from the thirteenth century. It is one of the few remaining testimonies of a Benedictine abbey today gone. This building, whose facade has been listed as a Historic Monument since 1914, offers an architectural overview of this medieval period, marked by religious and monastic influence in the region.
In the Middle Ages, Benedictine abbeys played a central role in local life, combining spiritual, economic and social functions. They often structured the territory around them, attracting artisans, peasants and pilgrims. The partial or total destruction of these groups, as in Bèze, reflects the historical upheavals (wars, religious reforms or abandonment) that affected the monastic heritage in France.
The preservation of this house thus recalls the past importance of the abbey in its rural Burgundy environment.
