Origin and history

The house at 8 rue Brémond-d'Ars in Quimperlé is a remarkable example of 16th century civil architecture. Its wooden panels facades, characteristic of the Breton urban buildings of this period, are complemented by two corbelled floors. These architectural elements, both decorative and functional, illustrate the know-how of local artisans and the evolution of construction techniques at the exit from the Middle Ages.

Classified as a Historic Monument by order of 19 October 1928, this house is one of the buildings protected for their heritage value. The protection relates specifically to the facade and roof on the street, as indicated in the cadastre (section AR 300). This classification reflects the importance attached to the preservation of historic city centres in Brittany, where half-timbered houses constitute a major architectural heritage.

The location of this house, in the center of Quimperlé (Finistère department), reflects the medieval urbanization of the city. At that time, wood-paned houses served as both a dwelling, a workshop and sometimes a place of commerce for artisans and merchants. Their corbelling structure also allowed space to be gained on often narrow plots, typical of fortified cities or organized around market places.
