Origin and history
The log house on 4 Rue des Prés in Châtillon-sur-Loire is an emblematic 16th century building marked by distinctive architecture. Its street façade features a grilled decoration with wooden panels and brick compartments, very individualized in the street. The dropper wall is organized in two levels under attices and in three vertical registers, with a wide central bay at cross and a carved support, with committed columns. Medallions carved on the middle olive preserve remains of painting, suggesting a once colourful facade.
This townhouse, built between its neighbours, presents an advance in relation to the alignment of the street, visible also at the level of the roof. Its history is not well documented but is linked to a landmark period for Châtillon-sur-Loire, that of religious wars, during which the city was influenced by Protestantism. A stylistically close house, demolished in 1879, dates this 16th century building.
The street façade and the roof of this house were listed as a Historic Monument by order of 17 November 1997. The first level of the facade was partially distorted by bay holes and a uniform coating, while the second level concentrates the bulk of the original decoration. The location of this monument is considered satisfactory a priori, with level 6 out of 10.
