François Reynaert - Architect and entrepreneur Designer of the eccentric neighborhood.

Origin and history

The Maison Les Cubes, located in Dunkirk, is part of a set of 35 houses called the eccentric district, built between 1929 and 1939. This urban and architectural project was led by François Reynaert, a native of Rosendaël, who improvised himself an architect for this project. The house, built around 1930 in reinforced concrete, is distinguished by its cubic volumes and geometric decor, which earned it its name.

François Reynaert, decorator and public works contractor, conceived this area as a global work, combining architectural innovation and modernist aesthetics. The Maison Les Cubes, whose facade and roof on the street have been protected since 1988, illustrates this bold approach. Its designation as Historic Monuments underscores its heritage importance in the architectural landscape of the 20th century.

The eccentric neighbourhood, with its avant-garde houses, reflects the architectural experiments of the 1930s, marked by the use of new materials such as reinforced concrete. These constructions also demonstrate a willingness to break with traditional codes, integrating innovative decorative and structural elements for the time.
