Origin and history

The house located at 18 rue Carnot in Saint-Macaire, Gironde, is an emblematic 15th century building. This building, which has been listed as historical monuments since 1941, is distinguished by its preserved facade, although the ground floor has been profoundly altered over the centuries. Notable architectural elements include two original windows, partially altered, and the remains of an old mâchicoulis, whose crows are still visible.

The first floor preserves traces of its medieval past with two windows of the 15th century, whose supports have been lowered and the shafts partially cut. These modifications illustrate the successive adaptations of the building throughout the eras. Official protection, granted by decree of 1 October 1941, concerns only the facade, stressing its heritage importance in the historic heart of Saint-Macaire.

Located in the old town, this house is part of a larger architectural complex, typical of the medieval towns of Nouvelle-Aquitaine. Its exact address, 18 Carnot Street, corresponds to the data from the Merimée database, although sources also mention number 20 as an approximation from GPS coordinates. This gap reflects the challenges of accurately locating ancient monuments in modern databases.
