Origin and history

The Saubist House, located in Bayonne in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques, is a medieval building built in the first half of the 14th century. Its most remarkable element is a vaulted cellar, prior to 1377, composed of a four-span vessel covered with broken døogives and arches. This underground area, accessible from the street by two large doors and straight stairs, bears witness to the architectural techniques of the period.

The cellar is organized around a wall along the rue des Prébendes, where two vaulted niches in a broken cradle sink under the public road, on both sides of a staircase. These developments suggest both practical and potentially commercial or storage use, typical of medieval urban houses. The building was partially protected by an inscription under the Historical Monuments in 1927, specifically concerning its cellar.

The exact address of the Saubist house, according to the Merimée bases, is the 1 rue des Prébendes, at the corner of the Street Up, in the historic center of Bayonne. Although its GPS location is approximate (2 rue Montaut), this monument illustrates the civil architectural heritage of the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region, marked by both gascones and Basque influences. The accuracy of its location is estimated as fair (note 5/10), reflecting the challenges of mapping old buildings in dense urban areas.
