Origin and history

The Sibra House, located in Lagrasse in Aude, is a 14th century corner building, characteristic of medieval civil architecture. It consists of a ground floor, a first floor and an attic, organized in three square rooms. Originally, the ground floor was opened on the street by two large arches, now partially modified. Access to the floor is via a modern wooden staircase, probably replacing an older system.

The first floor retains a 14th century ceiling, exceptionally decorated with murals depicting figures of men and women, coat of arms and grotesque motifs. These decorations, typical of the period, adorn the laths inclined between the Solives and the walls, while red nets dominate the rest of the composition. These artistic elements testify to the high social status of the occupants or sponsors of the period.

The house was partially classified as a Historical Monument by order of October 1, 1930, specifically protecting the part forming the corner of Foy Street and the courtyard, as well as its painted ceiling. This protection underscores the heritage importance of its interior decorations, rare for a civilian dwelling of this period. Today, its exact address is 3 Foy Street, in the historic centre of Lagrasse.

The current state of the house and its use (visit, rental, or private) are not specified in the available sources. However, its location in a medieval village classified among the Most Beautiful Villages of France makes it a remarkable element of local heritage. Lagrasse, an ancient monacal and merchant city, preserves a rich building from the 13th to 14th centuries, whose Sibra house is an emblematic example.

Sources mention a location accuracy considered fair (note 5/10), suggesting that additional verifications could refine its exact geolocation. The photographs available, licensed under Creative Commons, allow you to appreciate in part its exterior architecture and interior decorations.

In the absence of information on its historical occupants or its original function (bourgeois housing, commerce, etc.), the Sibra House illustrates above all the handicrafts and decorative techniques civil of the medieval Languedoc. Its early ranking (1930) reflects the heritage awareness of painted decorations, often neglected before the twentieth century.
