Origin and history

This house, located at 18 Metzger Street in Belfort, is a historic monument registered since 2003. Built around 1730 under the name Appartement Royer, it is one of the islands projected by Vauban in the bastioned town of Belfort, built from 1687. The building complies with the military requirements of the time in terms of alignment, elevation and decoration of facades, typical of a stronghold. It consists of a body of houses on the street, crossed by a cochère driveway leading to an inner courtyard with stables.

After the destruction caused by the siege of 1870-1871, the house underwent a complete interior renovation during the second half of the 19th century. The decoration of the first floor, inspired 18th century, is distinguished by its parquet floors, some of which are marked. The protected elements include the street façade as well as the decor of two lounges, a library and a dining room, reflecting its past prestige.

The building is now owned by a private company. Its architecture and history reflect both Vauban's military planning and Belfort's transformations following the Franco-Prussian conflict. The accuracy of its location is estimated as fair (level 5/10), and it is referenced under the code Insee 90010 for the municipality of Belfort, in the Territory of Belfort (region Burgundy-Franche-Comté).
