Moines bénédictins du Mas d'Azil - Historical owners
Owned these houses in the Middle Ages.
Origin and history
Maisons des Moines in Montbrun-Bocage are 14th-century wooden houses located in the village of Montbrun-Bocage, Occitanie. These buildings are the only ones of their type to have retained their original form, making them rare testimonies of the medieval civil architecture of the region. Their name comes from their historical affiliation with Benedictine monks of the Mas d'Azil, a nearby monastery.
Architecturally, these houses are distinguished by their two-storey facades, each with two windows. The wood-paned structure, with exposed crumbs and beams, is characteristic of this period. The beams, carved, add a decorative dimension to these utility buildings. The lower part of the facades has been modified little, thus preserving their authenticity.
These houses were protected as Historical Monuments by a decree of 11 April 1950, which specifically concerns facades and roofs. Their location, at 5003 F Rue des Moines in Montbrun-Bocage, is documented in the Merimée base, although geographical accuracy is considered to be satisfactory a priori (note of 6/10). Their state of conservation and their connection to local monastic history make them outstanding heritage elements.
