Origin and history
The barn of Cas, located in Espinas in Tarn-et-Garonne, is a 17th century historical monument. This large, one-storey building, with thick walls and rare openings, was initially used as a barn on the ground floor, with a vaulted room in a cradle. Upstairs, a large barn accessible by a ramp and a basket handle portal was supported by four arches in the middle of the hangar, supporting a robust frame. Its architecture reflects an agricultural and defensive vocation, typical of the rural buildings of the time.
This barn was linked to the castle of Cas, whose origins date back to the twelfth century, but whose current structure dates back to the seventeenth century. The estate was given in 1254 to the order of the Templars by Aymeric and Frotard de Cas, becoming an annex to the command of Lacapelle-Livron. The barn, with its architectural characteristics (bells, arches, gate), illustrates the Templar heritage and the adaptation of medieval buildings to the agricultural needs of the following centuries.
Ranked Historic Monument by order of 11 October 1984, the Case Barn bears witness to the rural and religious history of the region. Its state of conservation and its approximate location (accuracy noted 5/10) make it a remarkable vestige, although little visually documented. Available sources, such as Monumentum, highlight its heritage importance in the Occitan landscape.
