Origin and history
The Duroc Barracks is a military building built in the 2nd quarter of the 19th century in Pont-à-Mousson, in the department of Meurthe-et-Moselle (Great East region, former Lorraine). Located on Rue du Bois-le-Prêtre, near the city centre, it illustrates the square architecture of this period, marked by a functional spatial organization and a structural military presence in garrison towns. His ride, emblematic of cavalry barracks, was specifically preserved for its heritage value.
In 1912, the barracks were reconverted to accommodate the Pont-à-Mousson Hospital, originally located in the Premonstrated Abbey. This change reflects the adaptation of public buildings to civilian needs, particularly in the context of the modernization of health infrastructure. When Lorraine was liberated in September 1944, the hospital suffered a fire that marked its history for a long time, bearing witness to the destruction caused by the Second World War in the region.
The Duroc Barracks Manège was listed as a historical monument by order of 15 June 1977, recognizing its architectural and historical interest. This protection specifically concerns cadastre H 1649, stressing the importance of preserving this vestige of 19th century military practices. Today, the site remains a marker of local heritage, between military memory and hospital history.
