Origin and history
Castelet with its so-called Charles Quint tower is a medieval building located in the town of Muy, in the department of Var. Dating from the 14th century, this monument illustrates the defensive architecture typical of this period in Provence. Although its name evokes Emperor Charles Quint, no source provided confirms a direct link between the latter and the construction or history of the site.
The Castelet was included in the inventory of Historic Monuments by order of 10 April 1980. Owned by the municipality, it is located precisely at 7 A National Road 7, Muy. The available data indicate a geographical location which is considered satisfactory a priori, but which does not specify the current state or contemporary uses (visit, rental, etc.).
The Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region in the 14th century was marked by feudal organization and tensions related to local conflicts or Mediterranean exchanges. Buildings such as Castelet often served as surveillance points or refuge for people. Their presence also reflected the power of lords or urban communities, although the archives specific to this monument remain limited in the source text.
The sources mentioned (Monumentum, Merimée database) provide administrative information, such as the Insee code of the municipality (83086) or the cadastral reference (A 895), but do not detail the historical events related to the site. The name of Charles Quint's tower could be a local tradition or a subsequent attribution, not verifiable here.
