The castellas of Tournemire, in total, comprising all the structures in elevation, soils and basements, located Domaine de Blancardy, cadastre section C No 42, as delimited in red on the annexed plan: inscription by decree of 26 February 2025
Origin and history
The castellas de Tournemire is a ruins medieval fortress located in the commune of Moules-et-Baulels, in the Hérault department. It stands on the Blancardy estate, a few kilometers east of Ganges, at the foot of the Bois de Laroque mountain. This strategic site commands a vast plain bounded to the north by the road of Saint-Hippolyte-du-Fort (former Ruthene track) and to the south by the course of the Merdanson. Nearby are the castles of Ginestoux and Oliviers, also of medieval origin.
The castellas was listed as the Historic Monuments in February 2025, protecting all of its elevation structures, soils and basements, as well as its immediate environment. This classification covers the entire site, cadasted in section C No. 42 on the Blancardy estate, as delimited on a plan annexed to the registration order.
Although the sources do not specify the details of its construction or its occupants, its location suggests a defensive and surveillance role, typical of the medieval fortresses of the region. It is part of a landscape marked by other fortified buildings, reflecting the strategic importance of this area in the Middle Ages.
