Origin and history

The Château de la Poype de Serrières, also known as Château de Serrières, is an old house built between the end of the 13th and the beginning of the 14th century. Located in the municipality of Trept, in the department of Isère (region Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes), it underwent multiple transformations and enlargements until the 17th century. This monument illustrates the architectural evolution of medieval strong houses, adapted to defensive needs and then residential over the centuries.

The castle historically belonged to the family of La Poype, a local noble lineage. In the 20th century, it became the property of the Renaud Foundation, a cultural institution recognized as a public utility in 1995 and based in Lyon. Although it has been a historic monument since 18 May 1992 (including the castle, a forge, a dovecote and terrace walls), the site is not accessible to the public. A fire hit his addictions on 17 March 2025, recalling his vulnerability despite his protected status.

The architectural ensemble reflects the characteristics of medieval strong houses, combining defensive, residential and economic functions. The presence of a forge and a dovecote underlines its central role in the local seigneurial organisation, where these elements were essential to the autonomy of the estate. Today, its management by a cultural foundation reflects a desire for preservation, although its use remains limited.

The sources available, including the Merimée base and Wikipedia, confirm its heritage importance. Its exact address (5425 Serrières, 38460 Trept) and its Insee code (38515) place it precisely in the historical landscape of Isère, between Grenoble and the former commercial routes of the region.
