Castle (old) (Box A1,344): inscription by order of 8 May 1968

Origin and history

Amanzé Castle is a medieval building located in the village of Amanzé, Saône-et-Loire. Built in the 15th century, it embodies the defensive and residential architecture typical of this period in Burgundy. Its inscription in the title of historic monuments, effective since 8 May 1968, bears witness to its heritage value and the desire to preserve this vestige from the past.

At the time of its construction, Burgundy was a region marked by conflicts linked to the end of the Hundred Years War and feudal tensions. The castles, like that of Amanze, played a central role in the territorial organization: they served as both seigneurial residences, symbols of power and refuges for local people. Their architecture often reflected defence needs while integrating comfort elements for occupants.

Today, the castle of Amanze is listed in the heritage databases, especially Mérimée, which lists its architectural and administrative characteristics. Although the available sources do not detail its specific history, its existence illustrates the rich castral heritage of the Saône-et-Loire, a department with many similar buildings. Its current status and possible functions (visits, accommodation) are not specified in the documents consulted.
