Origin and history
The Castellum 18 of Caesar's army, located in Grésigny-Sainte-Reine (Côte-d'Or), is a monument dated from ancient times. This archaeological site has been classified as a Historic Monument since June 11, 1979, attesting to its heritage importance. Its location, although documented (address: 21150 Grésigny-Sainte-Reine), remains approximate according to available sources, with GPS accuracy considered poor (note 5/10).
Roman castella were temporary or permanent fortified camps, often linked to legions' movements. That of Grésigny-Sainte-Reine, designated as the " Castellum 18", suggests a structured military organization in the region during the Roman era. These facilities served as support points for territorial control, logistics and defence.
Burgundy, integrated into the Roman Gaul after the conquest of Caesar (I century BC), was a strategic area between the north and south of the Empire. The remains like this castellam illustrate the Roman military presence and its impact on local urban planning. Today, the site is protected, but information on its accessibility or tourist purpose remains limited in the sources consulted.
