Castral motte with its ditch (cad. AB 6, 7): entry by order of 21 August 1987

Origin and history

The castral mot of Épineuil-le-Fleuriel is an emblematic example of medieval fortification in the department of Cher. It consists of a central motte surrounded by its ditch, as well as two distinct low courts: the first housed a posterior castle, while the second housed the village itself. This site illustrates the attraction of castles on habitats, with a gradual displacement of the population from a Gallo-Roman site and a hermitage (Saint-Marien) to this new defensive and administrative pole.

The present village of Épineuil-le-Fleuriel has its origin in this medieval spatial reorganization, where the motte served as a strategic and symbolic heart. The monument, classified as a Historical Monument since 1987, preserves significant remains such as the ditch and traces of the lower courts. Its location, although documented (rue de la Motte Féodale), remains of an accuracy deemed satisfactory a priori (note 6/10), reflecting the challenges of archaeology for these ancient structures.

The castral motte thus embodies a heritage representative of feudal dynamics in the Centre-Val de Loire, where the castles structured the rural and urban space. Its inscription in the title of Historical Monuments underscores its historical and architectural value, while offering a material testimony to the social and territorial transformations of the Middle Ages in this region.
