Castral motte and its surrounding site (see G 117, 120 to 122, 128, 129, 1045) : inscription by order of 19 September 1989
Origin and history
La mote castrale de Montailler is a medieval vestige located in the municipality of the same name, Savoie, in the region Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes. This type of monument, typical of the Middle Ages, generally served as a point of defence and territorial control. Although the precise details of its construction and use remain unclear in the available sources, its inscription as Historic Monument in 1989 underscores its heritage importance.
In the historical context of the medieval Savoy, castral mots were often associated with local lords or noble families seeking to assert their power. These structures played a key role in the feudal organization, serving as a refuge in the event of conflict and symbol of domination over the surrounding lands. The life around these sites was marked by agricultural, artisanal activities and a strong social hierarchy, centred on the lord and his vassals.
The motte de Montailleur is part of this general framework, although its historical specificities remain partially documented.
