Vestiges de la moutte castrale et de son génage (Case C 376) : inscription by order of 1 February 1993
Origin and history
The castral motte of Saint-Martin-de-Jussac is a historic monument located in the commune of the same name, in Haute-Vienne (87), in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region. This site, classified among the medieval remains, includes the remains of a motte and its ditch, typical of the fortifications of this period. The inscription in the title of the Historical Monuments, which took place by decree on 1 February 1993, specifically protects these elements (Cadastre C 376).
The castral mots were defensive structures common in the Middle Ages, often built to control a territory or protect a local population. In Limousin, a region marked by feudal conflicts and seigneurial rivalries, these works played a strategic role. Although the available sources do not specify the exact date of its construction, this type of monument reflects the social and military organization of the time, where the local lords built fortifications to assert their power.
