Origin and history

The castral motte of Viviers is a historic monument located in the village of Viviers, Moselle, in the Grand Est region. This site, dated from the Middle Ages, is characteristic of the fortifications of land erected to control a territory or protect a local community. Its architecture, although partially erased by time, includes a motte (artificial stud) and a ditch, typical elements of the castles at this time.

In the Middle Ages, the castral mots played a central role in the feudal organization of Lorraine. They served as defence points, seigneurial residences or places of refuge for the surrounding populations. The region, marked by a rural economy and limited trade, saw these structures as symbols of power and stability.

Their strategic location, often near communication routes or waterways, reinforced their military and administrative importance. The Viviers mot is in this context, although the available sources do not specify its exact use or its potential occupants.
