Subterrains known as Catacombs de Champlieu (Case D 855): entry by order of 1 July 1965
Origin and history
The Champlieu catacombs, located in Orrouy, Oise, are a network of undergrounds dating from the Middle Ages. These galleries, referred to as "catacombes" by analogy with ancient necropolises, are in fact underground quarries or refuges, characteristic of medieval constructions in this region. Their exact use (storage, protection, stone extraction) remains partially documented, but their presence reflects the ingenuity of local communities to exploit the subsoil.
Classified as a Historical Monument by order of 1 July 1965, these catacombs are subject to heritage protection because of their rarity and archaeological interest. Their location, reported as "a priori satisfactory" (level 5/10), corresponds to the address of cadastre D 855, near the Residence Champlieu. Although their current access (visit, closure) is not specified in the sources, their inscription underlines their importance in the underground heritage of Picardie, now integrated with the Hauts-de-France.
The Oise region in the Middle Ages was marked by a rural and artisanal economy, where underground quarries played a key role in the extraction of building materials. These areas could also be used as shelters in times of conflict or as food conservation sites. The catacombs of Champlieu are thus part of a wider network of troglodytic sites, reflecting the architectural and social practices of the time, without specific details of their use or their constructors being available in current sources.
