Origin and history

Notre-Dame de Verdun Cathedral, located in the Meuse department in the Grand Est region, is one of the oldest in Lorraine and Europe. Its construction began in 990 under the impetus of Bishop Haymon, according to a Roman-Rhenish plan. The building, dedicated to the Virgin Mary, undergoes multiple transformations over the centuries, especially after fires and conflicts, integrating Gothic, Baroque and rock elements.

In the Middle Ages, the cathedral was marked by major reconstructions. In 1147, Pope Eugene III consecrated it in the presence of 18 cardinals. In the 12th century, the architect Garin rebuilt the oriental choir and added emblematic portals such as the Lion. The Gothic modifications of the 14th and 15th centuries, led by Pierre Perrat, include vaults, side chapels and a flamboyant Gothic cloister.

The fire of 1755 destroyed part of the building, resulting in a reconstruction in the Baroque and rock styles under the aegis of Bishop Aymar-Chrétien-François de Nicolai. Two of the four bell towers are not rebuilt. During World War I, the cathedral, which was targeted by German bombings, was severely damaged. Restored between 1919 and 1935, it found hidden elements, such as its 12th century crypt.

Ranked a historic monument in 1906, the cathedral houses a rich piece of furniture, including a baldachin inspired by that of St Peter's Basilica in Rome, 18th-century stalls and modern stained glass windows by Jean-Jacques Grüber. It also has a remarkable organ, restored several times, and a set of bells among the most imposing in France. In 1947, Pope Pius XII granted him the title of minor basilica.

The cathedral's architecture reflects its turbulent history, combining Romanesque, Gothic and Baroque elements. Its cloister, carved portals and crypts enriched with medieval frescoes make it a major site of the Lorraine heritage. The cathedral remains a symbol of resilience, having survived centuries of conflict and reconstruction.

Today, Notre-Dame de Verdun Cathedral attracts visitors for its artistic and historical heritage, but also for its role in collective memory, especially linked to the Battle of Verdun. Its stained glass windows, organ and bells make it a place of worship and culture in the Grand Est region.
