Origin and history

The Cathedral of the Nativity-de-Marie de Rieux-Volvestre, located in Haute-Garonne (Occitanie), was erected from the 13th century as a prioral church before being raised to the rank of cathedral in 1317 by Pope John XXII. This status was intended to strengthen Catholic influence in the face of persistent Catholicism in the Toulouse region. The building, in a southern style, preserves a 13th century fortified flat bedside, a 14th century Gothic nave, and a 17th century canonial choir with 61 carved walnut stalls. Its defensive appearance (walls of 3 meters thick, scalds) reflects the religious tensions of the time.

The 43-metre octagonal bell tower, typical of Toulouse architecture, dates back to the 15th century with its bays geminated in arches in mitre. The cathedral housed an episcopal treasure rich in reliquaries, statues and liturgical objects, as well as two bells of the sixteenth and eighteenth centuries. It was the seat of the bishopric of Rieux until 1801, the date of its attachment to the archdiocese of Toulouse by the bubble Qui Christi Domini of Pope Pius VII. Since then, it has served as a parish church, classified as a historical monument in 1923.

The successive reshuffles complicated his plan: the 14th century nave (1330–136) was enlarged in the 17th century, while the sacristy and a funeral chapel date from the 15th. A Renaissance gate (circa 1530) linked the episcopal palace to the cathedral. The towers and niches were destroyed at the end of the 18th century. The site, a former capital of the Volvestre royal court, also bears witness to a priory certified before 1119, linked to the Abbey of Lézat.

The restoration campaigns of the 19th to 20th centuries preserved its defensive elements and classified furniture, including stalls, reliquaries, and a funerary slab of the 15th to 16th centuries. Today a communal property, the cathedral combines religious, architectural and military heritage, illustrating the turbulent history of Catholicism in Occitanie.
