Origin and history

The Cathedral of Notre-Dame-de-l'Annunciation de Nancy, also known as the Primatiale, finds its origins in the will of the Dukes of Lorraine to obtain an independent episcopal seat. As early as 1552, after the annexation of the Trois-Évêchés (Metz, Toul, Verdun) by France, Nancy, capital of the Duchy, still depended on the bishopric of Toul. In 1602, after decades of negotiations, the church of Nancy was elevated to the rank of primatial, an intermediate status without its own bishopric. Two temporary churches were built before Leopold I of Lorraine launched, in 1703, the construction of the present building, completed under Stanislas Leszczynski.

The original plans, inspired by the church of Sant, Andrea della Valle de Rome, were modified by Jules Hardouin-Mansart and Germain Boffrand. The first Mass was celebrated there in 1742. The cathedral officially became episcopal seat in 1777, after the meeting of Lorraine with France and the dismemberment of the diocese of Toul. His status as a primatial continued, with a bishop cumulating the title of primate of Lorraine. In 1867, Pope Pius IX granted him the indulgences reserved for major Roman basilicas, a rare privilege.

The classical architecture of the cathedral, marked by a nave in a Latin cross and a dome decorated with a fresco by Claude Jacquart (1723–27), contrasts with the sobriety of its decorations. The gratings of the chapels, works by Jean Lamour (1751–155) and his pupil François Jeanmaire, recall the 18th century Lorrain craftsmanship. The facade, with its two towers nicknamed "Pompadour peppers" by Victor Hugo, illustrates the baroque balance. The treasure preserves the relics of Saint Gauzelin (Xth century) and a special worship is given to Saint Sigisbert, king of Austrasia, whose relics were desecrated during the Revolution.

Ranked a historic monument in 1906, the cathedral houses a large organ built by Nicolas Dupont (1756–163), rebuilt by Cavaillé-Coll in 1861 and restored between 2021 and 2024. With more than 187,600 visitors in 2024, it is the second most frequented site in Nancy after Stanislas Square. Its history reflects the political tensions between Lorraine and France, as well as the evolution of ecclesiastical power in the region.

Among the notable works of art, four paintings by Claude Charles and a Crucifixion attributed to Claude Deruet adorn the chapels. The cathedral was also the place of major episcopal ordinations, such as those of Charles Ruch (1913) or Jean-Paul Jaeger (1991). A plaque commemorating Eugene Tisserant, native cardinal of Nancy. Today, it remains a symbol of the religious and artistic heritage of Lorraine.
