Origin and history

Notre-Dame-de-l'Assumption Cathedral of Clermont-Ferrand, built in 1248 under the impetus of Bishop Hugues de la Tour, replaces a Romanesque cathedral itself, replacing older shrines. Inspired by the Sainte-Chapelle of Paris, his construction site was entrusted to Jean Deschamps, who used the Volvic stone for the first time, giving the building its dark colour and robustness. The choir, completed around 1273, welcomed in 1262 the royal marriage of Philippe le Hardi and Isabelle d'Aragon, partly financed by Saint Louis, who also offered stained glass comparable to those of the Sainte-Chapelle.

The construction stowed over centuries, marked by slowing downs due to conflicts such as the Hundred Years War or financial constraints, especially after the creation of the diocese of Saint-Flour in 1317. The towers of the transept, including the Bayette tower (50 m), served as a belfry and housed clocks as early as 1407. The cathedral suffered damage during the earthquake of 1490 and revolutionary destructions in 1793, where only furniture was spared thanks to the intervention of Benedictine Dom Verdier.

In the 19th century, Eugene Viollet-le-Duc and his pupil Anatole de Baudot completed the western facade and arrows (96 m), in a neo-Gothic style faithful to medieval methods. The cathedral, classified as a historical monument in 1862, houses stained glass windows from the 13th to the 16th century, among the most remarkable in France, as well as wall paintings from the 12th to the 15th centuries. Its organ, built by Merklin in 1877, and its 16th century jacquemart, transferred from Issoire, bear witness to its rich artistic and technical heritage.

The crypt, rediscovered in 1885, reveals Romanesque frescoes and a fourth-century sarcophagus, while Jean Deschamps' sculptures, engraved on the terrace, illustrate medieval stone-cutting techniques. The cathedral, raised to the rank of archbishop in 2002, remains a major spiritual and architectural symbol, linked to figures such as Urban II (which launched the first crusade there in 1095) or the organist Jean-Philippe Rameau.

Among the notable anecdotes, the statue-reliquary of the Virgin in majesty (X century), melted during the Revolution, was described in the Codex Claromontanus as an unparalleled masterpiece. The stained glass windows of the walk-in, offered by Saint Louis, combine fleurs de lilies and towers of Castille, while the blue rose of the northern gate (XIVth century) and the gargoyles of the bow-buttons highlight the influence both Parisian and southern of the building.

The cathedral also preserves traces of the Cult of Reason (1794), unique in France, and a 15th century bay rediscovered in 2013, decorated with gold leaves and rinceaux. His court, overlooking the Place de la Victoire, recalls the Council of 1095 and the central role of Clermont in medieval religious history.
