Origin and history

Notre-Dame-de-la-Sed d'Entrevaux Cathedral is the penultimate cathedral of the bishops of Glandèves, then of Entrevaux. Today, reduced to her bedside, she is only a chapel. Its origin dates back to the 12th century, although this dating requires confirmation. The building illustrates the religious and architectural history of this Provençal region, marked by the ecclesiastical transformations and the adaptations of the cultural buildings over the centuries.

Located in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence department, this former cathedral is located away from the current town of Entrevaux, on the right bank of the Var. Its location reflects the strategic and symbolic choices of medieval religious buildings, often located near rivers or on high sites to mark their presence in the landscape. The building was listed as historic monuments on June 27, 1996, recognizing its heritage value.

The cathedral bears witness to the evolution of the diocese of Glandèves, then of Entrevaux, of which it was a central place before losing its status. This change reflects the territorial and religious reorganizations that affected Provence and the Southern Alps, especially from the seventeenth century. Today, it embodies an architectural and spiritual heritage, preserved despite its reduction to a simple bedside.
