Origin and history

Saint-Pierre d'Angoulême Cathedral, located in the Charente department, is an emblematic building of 12th century Romanesque art, profoundly transformed in the 19th century. Its location would correspond to an ancient pagan sanctuary dedicated to Jupiter, replaced successively by three cathedrals before the current building. The first, dedicated to Saint Saturnin in the fourth century, was destroyed during the conquest of Angoulême by Clovis in 508. A second cathedral, consecrated in 566 by Saint Germain de Paris and Saint Euphrone de Tours, was burned down, probably by the Normans. The third, built by Bishop Grimoard of Mussidan (991-1018), was replaced because of its insufficient dimensions.

The present cathedral was initiated around 1110 under the impulse of Bishop Girard II (1101-1136), friend of the Dukes of Aquitaine and adviser to the Counts of Angoulême. The works, supervised by Canon Itier Archambaud, began with the nave, then the western facade, inspired by Toulouse sculptors who had worked in Saint-Sernin. The facade, adorned with scenes from the Ascension and the Last Judgment, also includes a frieze depicting episodes of Roland's Song, in connection with Zaragoza's reconquest (1118). Consecrated in 1128, the cathedral was enriched with chapels in the 13th century and served as a burial place for the Counts of Angoulême, like John d'Orléans (1400-1467).

Over the centuries, the cathedral suffered major damage: partial destruction during the wars of Religion (1568), transformation into a temple of Reason during the Revolution, and radical restorations in the 19th century by architect Paul Abadie (1852-1879). This work, commissioned by Bishop Antoine-Charles Cousseau, profoundly altered the interior and exterior, including the dome rebuilt in neo-Byzantine style. The western facade, in restoration since 2019, is a sculptural masterpiece ranked among the most remarkable of Romanesque art. Today, the cathedral houses a treasure set by Jean-Michel Othoniel and a classical organ rebuilt in 1965.
